Special Dates

There are a number of special dates during the Norsinovan year ranging from festivals to important state events (such as the convening of the Raeglsdag).

Grohin, Change Day – Change Year Day: The first day of Grohin is a Norsinovan wide holiday celebrating the start of a new year. Tradehouses and shops are generally closed on this day, but there is no law preventing them from operating. State services such as carrier mail do not operate. Gifts of new clothing are traditionally exchanged within the family and close friends circles on this day. For those who can afford it, dinner on this day is most often roasted lamb and fresh vardia shoots (the crisp semi-sweet stalk of the perennial vardia plant which returns late in the winter as the ground thaws). The traditional Change Year dessert is Gingermilk Pudding, a dish often served with sweet custard.

Damin, 1st Hawks Day – Raeglsdag First Meet: The second day of the month of Damin is the first meeting of the Raeglsdag. Envoys from each province, or lannsberg, are sent to the city where the meeting is to take place in advance of the day and on the meeting day an all day session of council is held with the appointed delegates. The host city usually has parades and displays of civic pride on and surrounding this day, usually involving presentations designed to show off strengths in military and cultural areas.

Palin, Change Day – Harvest Tide: The first day of the month of Palin is Harvest Tide, a celebration tied to the agricultural bounty of the year. Traditionally, Harvest Tide is spent feasting and preparing for the winter ahead. Any food that cannot be adequetly preserved for the colder months is served in great quantities at a communal meal. In the smaller villages and hamlets, this meal might be a gathering of the entire community, though in the larger centers the meals are held among family and friends only. A good deal of charity is given to the poor on Harvest Tide in the form of donating old clothing, food, and coin.

Palin, 1st Hawks Day – Raeglsdag Second Meet: The second day of the month of Palin is the second meeting of the Raeglsdag.

Xanen, 1st Hawks Day – Raeglsdag Third Meet: The second day of the month of Xanin is the third meeting of the Raeglsdag. At the end of the council session, lots are drawn to determine the meeting places for the coming year. The results are usually made part of the Change Year Day celebrations.
